Special Swimming Scheme

All students at Lurnea IEC participate in a Learn to Swim Water Safety program. The program is a NSW DEC sponsored initiative specifically implemented to improve the water safety skills of newly arrived refugee and migrant students. The program is held at the Whitlam Centre heated pool and is delivered by specialised swimming instructors provided by the NSW DEC.

AFL Clinic

Students enrolled at Lurnea IEC are privileged to participate in the Australian Football League high school program. The program is targeted at engaging newly arrived students in iconic Australian sports. Students participating in the program receive a gift pack and the opportunity to participate in a state wide Gala Day held at the Blacktown AFL facility.

NRL Clinic

Lurnea IEC offers students the opportunity to be part of the innovative National Rugby League IEC program. The program targets students from overseas and introduces them to the skills and opportunities available through participation in rugby league. The program also promotes life skills and  ways to be an active respectful contributor to the local community.

Football United & Creating Chances

Football United is an Australia wide initiative offering IEC students the opportunity to participate in a football program run for newly-arrived and refugee students. Each participant receives specialist coaching from professional football coaches. Participants undertake weekly training sessions and receive complementary football equipment and clothing. Students also get the opportunity to participate in a state wide gala day at the University of NSW and the possibility to attend the Football World Cup.

 

Creating chances is an exciting sports program for Lurnea IEC students. It has been running for the last 9 years at Lurnea H.S. The program provides opportunities for Lurnea IEC students through training during school, vacation camp, coaching, participating in an inter school competition, leadership courses and refereeing courses.The students are coached by professional coaches every Thursday afternoon from 2:10pm to 3pm. The program is free of charge.

Camp

Each year students at Lurnea IEC attend a three day camp at Teen Ranch Cobbitty. Students enjoy a variety of experiences including canoeing, abseiling, horse riding and swimming. They also participate in a bushwalk, culminating in a camp fire. The camp is held every December and is an opportunity for students to experience the Australian outdoors and interact socially outside of the school environment.
